What Tokyo 2020 Olympians can do for your brand

Athletes who compete for Australia offer brands a unique ability to access broad markets, and that marketability grows exponentially in the lead up to, and during, the Olympics.

It has long been a rule that individuals representing Australia at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games are not allowed to showcase and promote personal sponsors. This rule was made to protect the International Olympic Committee’s exclusive broadcast and commercial partners.

These restrictions have now been lifted, which means Olympians are more marketable than they have been at any point in history.

Here's our list of the most marketable athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Cate Campbell

The golden girl of the Australian swim team, Cate Campbell is approaching her fourth Olympic Games. With her current form worthy of winning medals at the FINA world titles in July, the freestyle specialist is looking to medal at her fourth consecutive games, having previously won Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as currently holding two world records.

Already sponsored by Uncle Toby’s and Arena Water Instinct, the 27-year-old studied a Bachelor of Communications and is an exceptional media performer.

Campbell’s presence on social media allows associating brands to expose their products and logos to her 98,000 strong audiences.

Gen LaCaze

As a middle-distance runner hailing from Queensland, Gen LaCaze has already represented Australia at two Olympic Games.

Having reached two Olympic finals at London and Rio, Gen became the fastest Australian female to run the 3000m steeplechase in 2016.

Already sponsored by Nike, Gen is highly sought after and is passionate about inspiring women across the country.

She has one of the biggest social media followings in the Australian Olympic team at 170,000.

Kyle Chalmers

The swimming sensation made a name for himself at the Rio Olympic Games, winning gold in the 100m freestyle as an 18-year-old. Following his successes at his first Olympics, Kyle won Olympic Program Swimmer of the Year, Australian Institute of Sport’s Male Athlete of the Year, and many more accolades.

Kyle's career has not been smooth sailing, overcoming adversity to win four gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games following surgery to treat a heart condition.

And in what looks set to be a fierce rivalry, Chalmers will be challenged by American Caeleb Dressel in Tokyo.

As one of the most well-known athletes in the Australian Olympic team and at just 21-years-old, Chalmers has already been awarded an Order of Australia medal and is set for a long career dominating the pool.

Anna Meares

As one of the most successful athletes to don the Australian uniform at the Olympics, Anna Meares has done it all in track cycling.

She is the only athlete in Australian Olympic history to win individual medals at four consecutive Olympics. Not only that, Anna is the most successful and decorated female in track cycling history, adding 11 World Championships to her trophy cabinet.

Anna was given the honour of being our Nation’s flag bearer at the Rio Games as recognition of her longevity and success in her sport, going on to win her sixth career Olympic medal. She has also won the Australian Elite Female Cyclist of the Year award seven times and Australian cyclist of the year twice in 2008 and 2012.

Following an accident in which she broke her neck, Anna was able to fully recover and is now in high demand as a motivational speaker. The cycling star is also involved in covering the Tour Down Under, lending her knowledge and insights whilst showing off her television talent.

Sally Pearson

Recently retired, Sally Pearson tasted the heights of success at the London and Beijing Olympic Games, winning gold and silver respectively in the 100m hurdles.

Always one of our most successful track and field athletes, Sally boasts an impressive trophy cabinet from both on and off the running track, most noticeably being named International Female Athlete of the year in 2011 and Athletics Australia Female Athlete of the Year on four occasions.

Due to her success and personable nature, Pearson has featured in a number of marketing campaigns for high-profile brands, including Adidas, Coles, and Audi.
