Rugby star Nathan Charles inspires teenagers battling cancer
The Brief
Sports personality to engage with teenagers at the Monash Children's Cancer Centre AYA Body Image Clinic and speak on their sporting journey and how to remain positive in the face of challenges.
Solution
The Ricky Taylor Foundation (RTF) is a small not-for-profit charity that sponsors the Monash Children's Cancer Centre AYA (Adolescent Young Adult) Clinic.
This clinic provides teenagers who have been diagnosed with cancer with monthly activities, targeted psychological information and education, and opportunities to socialise with other patients.
September's theme was 'body image' and the RTF held a fun fashion clinic for patients.
However the hospital RTF wanted to take their event to the next level and put on something extra exciting for their patients, so they came to Pickstar looking for an optimistic and engaging sports personality to speak to the kids and boost their spirits.
Together, the clients and Pickstar discussed which sports stars would be a good fit for the event a decided Rugby Union player and national ambassador for Cystic Fibrosis Nathan Charles would be perfect.
Nathan, who has had his fair share of adversity and personal challenges, loved the idea of being able to engage with the teenagers and was quick to jump on board with the event.
Outcome
The RTF Fashion Clinic was wildly successful and elicited huge smiles from event attendees, and Nathan travelled from Perth to Melbourne to present his highly motivational speech to the teenagers.
The story of Nathan's personal journey with cystic fibrosis captivated his audience, as did insights into his experience of achieving his goals despite the most difficult of obstacles.
More importantly, Nathan inspired the teenagers to maintain a positive mindset, to have belief in themselves, and to focus on their journey towards achieving their goals.
The team at the Ricky Taylor Foundation and Monash Children's Hospital were extremely grateful for Nathan's big contribution to the event and thanked him for supporting their patients in their fight against cancer.
