Geelong AFL star booked for mental health presentation

Deakin University is one of the largest universities in Australia, with more than 54,000 students throughout their metro and regional campuses.

When a boarding house for students in Geelong wanted to provide male residents with a seminar on welfare and self-care, they knew Pickstar could source a suitable talent.

Deakin Residential Services (DRS) contacted PickStar just four days out from their event, looking for a sports star who would be both entertaining and informative. Given the boarding house is in Geelong, and Cats star was preferable for the organisers of the event.

Organisers wanted the boys to take away an appreciation of the importance of welfare and self-care and were thrilled that Cam spoke candidly about the need to look out for mates and acknowledge that it is OK to not feel OK.

Having experienced mental health struggles himself, Cam described how not reaching out to people close to him had affected him deeply.

“Cam was fantastic ... it was more raw and honest than I was expecting but it was great that Cam was able to do it. I feel it assisted in helping the young males realise it’s OK to talk about their mental health. It was a great night and we will definitely look to have Cam back again next year for a similar session."
