Case Study: Basketball stars a slam-dunk for anti-smoking campaign in Regional WA
Health organisations understand how difficult it can be to cut through with the anti-smoking message, particularly when these campaigns are aimed at children and adolescents. That’s why Mawarnkarra Health Services decided to use PickStar to book four elite Australian basketball athletes to bring some star power to their ‘Tackling Indigenous Smoking’ campaign.

Sports stars to attend the ‘Tackling Indigenous Smoking’ event on 12 April, 2019, in Roebourne, WA, to speak about the implications of smoking and educate the community on the benefits of sports and exercise.
Connecting with PickStar:
After using PickStar last year to booked four AFL and AFLW players for their hugely successful ‘Kick Smoking to Kick Goals’ event, Mawarnkarra Health Services connected with PickStar once again, this time to secure basketball athletes who would elevate their ‘Tackling Indigenous Smoking’ event in Roebourne.
Smoking is a prominent issue within the Roebourne community in Western Australia and a major concern for health leaders, with children as young as eight-years-old taking up the habit.
The sports stars shared their experiences and talked to the young people about the importance of living a fit and healthy lifestyle, before running a skills clinic and mingling with fans.
To help Mawarnkarra secure the talent, the PickStar team were able to recommend a comprehensive list of elite basketballers who would be perfect for the event.
The client was impressed with the PickStar's comprehensive marketplace of stars, which included a range of national, international and Olympic basketball players.
Once Mawarnkarra shortlisted four sports stars, the PickStar team swiftly notified the athletes, who were quick to express their eagerness to participate in the event.
The athletes spent the morning educating the community on the debilitating effects of smoking as well as the great benefits of participating in sports, which includes improved health and well-being.
The kids then enjoyed lunch with the sports stars before the four athletes spent the afternoon running a fun skills clinic.
After the hard work was done, the community had the opportunity to mingle with the athletes, who signed autographs and posed for photos.
Mawarnkarra were again very happy with the athletes’ enthusiasm for the activities across the day, and believed the event had a positive impact on the kids' attitudes towards smoking.
