This Girl Can - Victoria is an empowering campaign which strives to celebrate all women getting active and inspire girls and women to try new sports.
Despite an increase of female acceptance in sports like AFL, around 50% of women still don’t undergo enough exercise a week, mainly from fear of judgement or doubt over fitness levels.
This year, This Girl Can – Victoria and the City of Whittlesea were proud to hold the inaugural ‘This Girl Can’ Week between 18th – 24th March, which provided numerous free activities for girls and women to try.
The Whittlesea Council believed a sports star MC would be the perfect way to kick off the week and draw further interest from female athletes.
That's why they reached out to PickStar to search for a personable, entertaining and motivational AFLW to launch the event.
The Whittlesea Council were dazzled with PickStar’s variety of AFLW athletes and new filtering system, which allowed them to specifically search for AFLW MCs.
It wasn’t long after PickStar notified all shortlisted athletes that Sharni Layton enthusiastically grasped at the opportunity to inspire women to be active.
Sharni Layton is renowned globally for her infectious smile and bubbly personality, so the City of Whittlesea were wrapped to work with the Collingwood AFLW superstar.
Hundreds of young girls and women flooded the Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre on the 18th March, and their morning was immediately brightened by the endearing Sharni Layton.
Sharni spent the morning encouraging women to ignore their fears of judgement and embrace the rewards of giving new sports a go.
She also announced winners of female participation grants and thanked local women who helped make a video which promotes female participation in physical activity.
The community was enthralled by the opportunity to listen to Sharni’s insights, advice and words of wisdom, and the City of Whittlesea Council believed she had a positive influence on the women’s attitudes towards participating in sports.
