Melbourne Cup 2017: Family Feud at Flemington

Another year, another stellar Melbourne Cup win but this time it was a battle between father and son in the closing metres of the race.

Rekindling took out the 2017 Melbourne Cup and trainer Joseph O'Brien couldn't be happier, after claiming victory over his father, Aidan O'Brien, whose horse Johannes Vermeer came in a close second.

The youngest horse in the field gave trainer Joseph, at just 24 years old, something that his father has never managed to attain: a Melbourne Cup victory.

It was a tight race overall with Max Dynamite coming in third however, crowd favourite Marmelo, who looked good at the start, was left trailing.

Aiden was not trackside to see his son's victory, instead, he was busy preparing for the Breeders Cup in the US, but was delighted at the win for Rekindling.

While he has made numerous bids at the Cup, with horse Mahler placing third in 2007, victory has continued to evade him at Flemington.

While the top two finishers were Irish, they are part-owned by Australian Lloyd Williams who now has a staggering record of six Melbourne Cup wins.

It was also jockey, Corey Brown's second Cup victory, having previously won on Shocking in 2009.
