Australian NBA Star Fills In For Local Team

Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons has stunned Melbourne locals by joining in on a suburban game of basketball.

Simmons was holidaying in his hometown of Melbourne when one of his good friends asked him to play as a fill-in.

“When I heard it was him I was a bit skeptical at first,” basketball fan Matthew Stone said.

“As everyone started talking I thought I’d head down here, and I was shocked how big he was,” he added.

“One of his close mates brought him down for a game to just fill in, no one in the stadium knew it was him until about five minutes into the game and then about 60 people rocked up to watch him play. It was crazy,” witness Mitchell Hamilton told the Herald Sun.

“He didn’t try until the last quarter and then scored like 15 in a row and dunked on two blokes.”

Simmons ended the game with 34 points as his team recorded a 72-52 win.

Originally from Melbourne, the 21-year-old was picked up by the 76ers as the number one draft pick in 2016 NBA Draft, however a broken foot last September caused him to miss the entire season.
