The Athlete Paid Millions To Do Nothing!

July 1 is Bobby Bonilla Day – a New York tradition where the former Mets outfielder receives his annual salary of USD $1,193,248.20 – even though his last game was in 1999.

This was part of a deal made when the Mets released Bonilla before the 2000 season while they still owed him $5.9 million for the final year of his contract. Adding an extra 8% annual interest rate to that money, and seven payments now in, Bonilla has collected a whopping $8,352,737.40 for doing absolutely nothing.

There are 18 more payments due to Bonilla through 2035. When all the payments are made, Bonilla will have turned that $5.9 million into $29.8 million.

And what’s even better, he lives in Florida – where there is no state income tax!

Well done Bobby. Well done.
