This Kid Didn't Know He Was Playing Ball With a Star!
14-year-old Robbie McNulty received the surprise of a lifetime when NBA All-Star Isaiah Thomas rocked up to his local ballpark.
When rain left puddles all over the basketball court, none of Robbie’s friends wanted to play – so he decided to go to the courts himself, which turned out to be one of the best decisions of his life!
He was shooting hoops all alone when he saw a man walking up to him and asked if he could join – that man turned out to be Boston Celtics superstar Isaiah Thomas.
“When I was playing basketball before he came, I saw someone walking toward me but you know, he wasn’t that tall, so I didn’t expect [it was him],” McNulty said.
Isaiah’s son goes to school nearby and he was killing time.
“He was the only kid there,” Thomas said. “So I’m like, ‘I’m just going to go get some shots up with him.’ When I walked over, he rebounded his own shot and turned around and I’m like, ‘Can I get a couple of shots?’ And he stopped. He didn’t even say a word like his eyes were so big. He just stopped and froze and I’m like, “Pass me the ball.”
They shot hoops for about 10 minutes and when Isaiah left, Robbie texted all his family and friends about it. Initially, his friends didn’t believe him until he sent them a picture of the pair together. He later uploaded it to Instagram where Isaiah commented – “nice rebounding for u”.
McNulty then scored an interview on Good Morning America where Isaiah surprised him once again! This time he invited him to be a guest at one of his games.
The moment had an impact on Isaiah too.
“I love just little interactions like that,” he said. “I know it means a lot because I was once in his shoes. I was once that kid at games wanting a player to just wave to me and acknowledge me, so I know that feeling and I know that’s my job now”.
“I knew maybe even if he didn’t know who I was it would be cool to just rebound for him and shoot with him for the 10 minutes that I did.”
